Córtex Frontal is an AIR programme in the town of Arraiolos, in Alentejo region, Portugal.

Minimum stay is 3 weeks / Maximum 3 months. For other stay length please ask.

HABITAR, a residency programme for photographers
March 2019
During the whole month of March, Córtex Frontal - artist residency hosted a Photography residency, directed by Susana Paiva, where she mentored the participant´s projects in individual and group sessions.
At the same time, we open the doors to public events such as a photography exhibition, masterclasses by invited photographers, presentations of photography and performative projects, projection of a film cycle and the creation of a performative action by Susana Paiva whose debut was planned for August 2019 at Citemor Festival.

STUDY VISITS AND EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP
APRIL 2019
In 2019 Córtex Frontal began a partnership with the tapestry office Arte em Casa in which artists can learn the basis of Arraiolos embroidery with the goal of creating new approaches to it.
In order to improve the mobility of resident artists around Arraiolos, Évora district and Alentejo region, this year we started a partnership with the anthropologist Daniel Freixa, which will consist of study trips like this one: Arraiolos & rugs history approach and also visit the paintings by Dordio Gomes.

APRIL 2019
In association with the Évora Sketchers and the Imagem Impressa office we organised an experimental workshop on drawing on tiles. We learned some techniques of drawing on fired and raw glazed tiles.
In the afternoon the Évora Sketchers group went to sketch in the old convent where the Pousada de Arraiolos is.

DRAWING AND PRINTMAKING RESIDENCY WITH MEREDITH NEMIROV AND JORGE ANCHONDO

This couple of artists were, for the second time, in residence at Córtex Frontal. This time they were mentoring a group in their study trip in Arraiolos and around where they were drawing, painting and printmaking.
Jennifer Ghormley, american artist and printmaker gave a printing workshop (Monotype and stencil techniques).

Pensar a residência#1 PERIPHERY AND COMMUNITY

Pensar a Residência #1 was a think tank, an invitation to listen and share diferente “shapes” of what could be an artist residency. ANGÉLICA, HENRIQUETA e VIRGINIA, Confluências (s)em Pessoa, configura-se numa performance-ficção sobre a irmã do Poeta. Não pretende afirmar-se numa narrativa linear ou seguir códigos de representação; os sinais estão lá, à espera de quem os deseje seguir. Mas sem vínculos à leitura. A qualquer momento tudo se desfaz para partir à procura “de uma luz acesa dentro do nevoeiro do tempo”, citando Jorge de Sena.
Será sempre dela que se trata. Da Henriqueta, da Teca, da Henry. Todas elas, uma.

Josephine Mead is an Australian artist and writer. Working through photography, sculpture, installation and text, she is interested in personal notions of support. In 2019 she was awarded a Career Development Grant through the Australian Council for the Arts to attend Córtex Frontal residency.
During her time undertaking the Córtex Frontal residency, Josephine worked primarily through photography and writing, she positioned the embedded histories of the architecture of the house, and of the objects within the house, as metaphoric matter for self-examination.
